Hello All,

There are at least a few of us on here who are active on the forum and are based in the UK. Which probably signifies there are a lot more who are either active on sections I don't usually frequent or who don't really join in but are nevertheless keen domainers.

As lockdown conditions are slowly being lifted we should soon able to socialise with friends, colleagues, family and - dare I say it? - strangers once more. Even indoors.

How many would enjoy a UK held conference or meet-up of some kind? Even if there are only a few of us, we should be able to design an engrossing and useful agenda to fill a day if held somewhere central. Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester are easy enough to get to for most. London is crowded, expensive and it's a lot harder to find a venue when we want it. Obviously the extremities of Scotland, Cornwall and a handful of others will be difficult wherever we select as the venue.

Do bear in mind that it can take months to organise such an event if there are lots of us, which is the ideal situation. We don't have any funds for this so for the first one at least, we'll have to share the costs between us, which is another factor unless we can find sponsors with deep pockets. What I personally refuse to join in with is a promotional event for a single body with a vested interest. We'll have to restrict sponsors to advertising only, making it clear we are fully independent and advertisers are just that. Advertising/sponsorship is not a sign of endorsement. Blah blah. You get the drift.

Thoughts in the comments, please. If you don't like joining in on public forums, please vote instead. I'd prefer voters not to comment but if you comment as well, please tell us you have voted so we don't double-count.

With thanks,

Mike

I agree @honestbobby. But the first question has to be "will there be enough participants to make it worthwhile?".

I would also like to find out whether there are vibrant markets in European countries and further afield for their own ccTLDs, and perhaps invite contributors from one or two countries where there are, to help us develop the *.uk aftermarket. Quite apart from wanting to meet with domainers from wherever they hail from.

But I'd like to see who will participate and perhaps make decisions between all of us on items such as venue, agenda, invitations for sponsorships, such as advertising or supporting specific topics or speakers. I have ideas I will be happy to put into the mix for discussion, but I don't want to predetermine how it should all work. For this to be a success it needs to have a wider consensus.

If we can only muster three or four of us, the most we could organise would probably be an informal lunch, so hardly worth the effort for people who have to travel a long way, even from within the UK. But as the numbers grow the idea can grow with them. With large numbers it could be developed into something really worthwhile.

Another important factor is that there are events planned in the USA and Europe by exiting organisations. It is not my intention to water those down by diverting attendees to the UK. We should complement, rather than compete with, them.

If sufficient interest is shown here it will be worthwhile to announce it on other discussion boards too.

Thank you, but... did you really read the original posting?
I think people automatically assumed he was new to the forum just because he posted in the Meet and Greet section

@Mike Goodman A good place to investigate this is Acorn Domains, the biggest UK forum (I'm there)

I'm sure there would be some interest, why not. A good suggestion Mike

Initially uk domainers could meet up for a coffee somewhere central to see how they get on and put a face to a username etc and take it from there etc

This is what I'd be more up for than a full conference. A couple of beers in a pub somewhere to say hello to people. I dont wanna pay money to go to a large venue with hundreds of people.

:) hundreds of people is almost nothing at a real event (if the premises are large enough).

This reminds me of a 2day international webmaster event (quite private) in Ireland, I attended 5 or 6 years ago. They had around 100 attendees altogether. The problem was - the event was split in 2 locations of a large country club (opposite sides of the country club), and people could not even meet everyone. + people tend to fly in with friends, sometimes with lovers and quite often they plan to do much more than just network, for example, sightseeing. Sidenote: I had a stand and got 2 contracts for around eur15k with 2 major German companies (the owners were there) :) have to admit, both of them had stands there as well, were bored and therefore we had 2 days to negotiate the deals.

A 4 hour evening in a pub with 15-20 people can't be compared with a 3-day event to which people fly from various places with the main task = do business.

If you wish to meet international domainers and international companies that provide services to the domainers - international summits and conferences are "must attend" ones.

Which domain niche company would you like to meet? .. or domainer?

I dont want to meet people who want to do business. I want to meet people who are being genuine and not motivated solely by making money. I want to sit and have a pint with like minded everymen and women like myself and discuss domaining in very personal ways. I dont want to try and sell anything to anyone and I dont want anyone to try and sell anything to me.

I think you underestimate the power of 15-20 people in a pub with a few pints.

ok :) you could be right.

This is a business event, where people will be boosting their professional network and doing business.

There is nothing wrong with selling :) .. even opposite - it is to make both sides happy.

All the best!
