Frank Schilling sold his Uniregistry new gTLDs. Godaddy has moved into the gTLD business in a big way. Google is still a bit clueless on gTLDs.
There's a lot of consolidation in the new gTLDs. The evaluation fee for the 2012 round of new gTLDs was $185K from what I remember. There are talks about launching a new round of new gTLDs in the next few years but many of the 2012 round are struggling with poor sales and poor renewals. There are some good new gTLDs though and some of the gTLDs targeting the US/EU/AU markets are doing well.
Far from being the licence to print money that some 2012 registries expected, many of the new gTLDs failed to meet expectations. Some resorted to heavy discounting to build their zone files but it is not unusual to see some of those discounters have a >95% replacement of a zone in a year. The theory behind it is simple. The discounted domain names renew at full fee (often a multiple of the .COM regfee) and that small percentage keeps growing the core of the zone each month.
There's a great line from the movie "Rounders" that every domainer should remember: "If you can't spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, then you ARE the sucker."
Do your research before investing.
