Expiry dates and Registrars

I had a Domain expire yesterday at NameCheap. I was away and didnt renew it on time. I logged in today and noticed that the Domain has already been removed from my account, do most registrars work this way? Isnt there a Registrar Hold time frame at which point we can still renew our Domain?

The reason why I ask is another Registrar I use gives you like 30 days after the Domain has expired to renew it, like it stays in your account.

I know that OnlineNIC removes domains about 2 weeks after expiration. But the whole time you can contact support and ask them to put it back to the account.

Thanks, I did contact NC and requested that they do just that, put it back
