Once you've found a domain you like and it's available to register how do you go about protecting it?
By that I mean, do you register other like domains? For example I like the domain, GreatestScam.com, and as of this writing it's available to register. However, here are all sorts of options that are also available;

This is just my thinking and I'm far from being a linguist like Margot of BrandBucket, but Greatest seems better to me than just great, and I'm mixed between the singular or plural, Scam or Scams.
What do others think?
