Do You Need To Be A BOT To Bid On GoDaddy Auctions?

So been watching Godaddy auctions, there is a character in play who bids $5+ at a time, every few minutes, thought it was a one off event, but across numerous domains, this can go on for over an hour if need be.

So Godaddy has been shy with usernames, but maybe it is time bidders get some integrity on this.

The user experience for us human bidders, is quite time consuming, Godaddy has to value the time of their customers better. Level the playing field.

Yes, get some sleep, neither of them do exactly at 5 minutes, but both of them keep bidding +$5, at random intervals, but only $5 at a time, even if it takes over an hour.

Yes...GoDaddy use Bots for some names if they (or their clients) want it desperately.
Especially you see automatic bids by bots.
So forget to get good names in Godaddy auction.
These auctions are just to show. GoDaddy already decide who will be winner.
Its not fair game any more.

before some days I got same experience.
I bid on one name and I should get message of my bid but in millisecond bot beat me and I got message You're Outbid!
I again bid with more $5 but get same message .. You are Outbid!
After 3 attempts I got to know this is Godaddy bot and its impossible to beat him.

So for the domain clicksecurity.com the auction was supposed to be over around 10:40am PST it got extended over 2 hours by $5 bids by the same bidder, one by one, $5 at a time.

If GoDaddy cares about human customers, they might:

1) Change something with autologout "security" feature. Re-entering the password so frequently is not productive

2) Improve the system so all the expiring auctions closing times would be within 1-2 hours range every day, not ~6 hours like now. A synchronization with dropcatch/snapnames closing time will be the best.
Too many auctions and the servers cannot process it? OK, recent news indicated that GD is switching to amazon aws infrastructure. So GD will soon have an opportunity to increase ram/capacity/whatever dynamically if needed, for all servers including auctions.godaddy.com.

Coincidentally just got off the phone about doing an automatic bid myself as I saw one domain on auction getting automatic bid too.

I asked GD rep if I can do the same. They said there is no such set up. You simply place the most you are willing to bid and that's it.

So right now say the domain has a high automatic bid of $236. If the automatic bid was $236 and let's say your max bid is$1000. And the other guys max is $500.

The next bid will be $505 from me since my max bid is over $500.

Mind you the domain in question has a GD appraisal of $x,xxx.

I don't know about you but I'm a bit skeptical about this. Looks shady.

Bidders don't know each other on GD.

So how can we know if the automatic bid is a real person or just GD bidding up a domain to increase their commission?

Plus obviously they can't tell us what "the other guy's max bid is.

I don't think godaddy is an unethical company, but I think they need to level the playing field, and come out on the real reason they have delayed the active display of usernames, or bidding id's to identify such bidders. They say they review these matters thru an internal filter, but either give everyone api bot type access, or give it to nobody.

I really don't have the time, I was already time invested so I thought I would follow it thru, this will drive any human mad, to sit there, and see your top offer just get bid up by $5 every time, getting even more eyeballs with each bid, for hours on end, how will you ever win an auction?

This is great for maximizing revenue for godaddy, but bad customer experience for bidders.

Bots have all the time in the world, us humans we got a few things to take care of, back in the day, a bid used to reset to 2 minutes, then godaddy changed it to 5 minutes, you saved a lot of time, when it was 2 minutes.

To this day a proper answer has never been given for the lack of display of bidder id's, every other auction house does this, it just seems off they still resist, I would guess that thousands would be for it, and maybe a dozen parties against it. Every bidder is already assigned a user id, or number, it is really the act of some simple coding to display it next to the bid.

well, you should keep track of the name and find out who the winner is/was - assuming the bot bidder was the one who won.

you might have to wait a week or so, until the name changes hands and the whois is updated.

i've seen similar occurrences where a bid i placed seconds before an auction is about to end and then gets reset to 5 min, and again seconds before a name ends and resets 5 minutes again, over and over again.

This is the teeth-grinding experience I've noted too, multiple times. I can almost handle the plodding $5 per bid increase each time, but why leave it (every time) to 5 seconds before the auction finishes?

It is becoming more, and more constant, to the point of why bother. I put big proxy gaps from current price, 30-45 mins, 5 dollars at a time, sure enough they caught up. I don't know if people are playing more of the appraisals or what, but from my conclusion the same $5 pusher, won both of these auctions, by eventually outbidding proxies. It will be interesting to find out who they are.

Somebody on SnapNames is/was doing exactly this for years, a bidding handle who then frequently required a few weeks (or, in some cases, up to 2 months) to pay - according to auctions history. May well be the same domainer. It appears that in GD case he will have to pay without delays though.

Yes, I am super hesitant about aftermarkets especially after getting run up by Wittynut at Dropcatch who was later deemed a misfit with magical cart powers. Dropcatch vowed to fix things, and have transparency, they seemed to have done the opposite as you can't even access bidding history for domains you have won, or lost. Most likely because guys like Arca found so many holes in the bidders, and their payment delays, and all that other fun stuff.

Anyone can build a GoDaddy bid-bot. Use their auctions API and turn it on.

All you have to do is check the price, if the price is below what you would pay for it then place a $5 incremental bid. Do this every 5 minutes until your opponent quits or it is out of your budget.

There are no more valuable domains at GoDaddy auctions, so build yourself a bid-bot and set your budgets.

That's proxy bidding and nothing shady about it. Pretty much all major auction houses support it and it is a needed feature given the global timezones that these auctions run in! You simply do not understand proxy bidding.

For exactly the reason why you were teeth-grinding... To wear out other bidders so that they give up earlier. The easiest counter for these bots are to place a proxy bid at the highest amount you're willing to pay for the domain and walk away. If the bots bid higher than your proxy, you anyway do not want to buy at that price...

Why not give it a shot and check for a domain that you and any of your domainer acquaintances are planning to bid on? (Note: I'm NOT condoing or suggesting shill bidding. Please do not do so). Really, you can form conspiracy theories all you want but without evidence, they merely that, theories with no basis. I'm no fan of GD but making such assumptions harms no one but you. I'd be hard pressed to believe a public company would engage in deceptive practice as such (Not that others haven't done so). But without proof, there is no basis

Further, does your suspicion of proxy bidding extend to other platforms as well?
