President Trump’s first Secretary of Defense James Mattis called the riots in Washington, DC, today a "violent assault on our Capitol, an effort to subjugate American democracy by mob rule" and said it "was fomented by Mr. Trump.”

Mattis said Trump has used “the Presidency to destroy trust in our election and to poison our respect for fellow citizens has been enabled by pseudo-political leaders whose names will live in infamy as profiles in cowardice.”

As expected. Joe Biden is officially the next president after the results were confirmed by Congress and announced by Mike Pence. 306-232.

Mike Pence is really the only Republican that looked good here, by simply following the rules.

I am not sure what Trump really expected him to do. It was a completely unreasonable ask, after 4+ years of nothing but loyalty, to expect him to go against the Constitution to overturn the will of 150M+ voters.

Donald Trump's legacy is destroyed. This day will go down in infamy like Pearl Harbor, JFK assassination, 9/11.

It is the day the sitting president incited violence and committed sedition against the United States itself. Anyone involved in this like Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley will have no future on the national stage.

The GOP made a deal with the Devil. Was it worth it?

Agree about Pence, but yesterday I have to say that I listened talking live Mitt Romney and he was simply excellent on his speech. He even asked another republican senator to withdraw his intention to object to Electoral College yesterday.
Also the South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham was also very good yesterday on his speech defending the victory of Joe Biden.
Most of republican senators yesterday agreed to withdraw objections to Electoral College after the Capitol siege. Except for a few that won't look very good in the eyes of History.

It is quite obvious who incited the mob that commit sedition and insurrection yesterday.

'Let us in!': What happened after Trump told his supporters to swarm the Capitol

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/do...fter-trump-told-his-supporters-storm-n1253168

The crowd didn't even wait for him to finish speaking.

WASHINGTON — When rioters descended on the Capitol on Wednesday, they were following directions from President Donald Trump.

"We're going to have to fight much harder," Trump told supporters at a rally near the White House before the assault, adding: "We are going to walk down to the Capitol, and we're going to cheer on our brave senators, congressmen and women, and we are probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them. Because you will never take back our country with weakness."

Many in the massive crowd, soaked in the falsehoods and conspiracy theories about the election that Trump has been spewing for months, didn't even wait for the president to finish speaking. They began a march on the Capitol, where they would break through police barricades, rip through the chambers of Congress and vandalize the core symbol of the federal government.

The rioters' efforts to stop Congress' confirmation of President-elect Joe Biden's victory were unsuccessful. But, like the president, they kept hitting the same note.

"It's not over!"

Rising number of Democrats call for Trump impeachment

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/06/trump-impeachment-capitol-riots-455693

A growing number of Democrats — more than three dozen, at last count — are calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, pointing to his role in inciting rioters to storm the Capitol on Wednesday and the damage he could cause in the final two weeks of his term.

“Despite the seditious attempt to overthrow our democracy, we in Congress will fulfill our duty to ensure the will of the people and the integrity of our democracy are upheld. But the next days and weeks remain dangerous,” said Assistant House Speaker Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) in a statement. “Donald Trump is a traitor to our country and our Constitution. He must be removed from office and prevented from further endangering our country and our people.”

‘He screwed the country’: Trump loyalty disintegrates

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/06/trump-loyalty-capitol-attack-455667

Donald Trump caused this insurrection with lies and conspiracy theories about the election being rigged against him,” said Scott Jennings, a former aide to President George W. Bush who is close to the Trump White House. “The election was not stolen but this madness was fomented by the president and his top advisers.”

"Tom Bossert, the president's former Homeland Security and Counterterrorism adviser, said Trump had "undermined American democracy baselessly for months" and was therefore "culpable for this siege."

Rep. Kinzinger is first Republican to say 25th Amendment should be invoked

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., became the first Republican to say that he believes the 25th Amendment should be invoked and that President Trump should be removed from office.

Kinzinger said he wants Vice President Pence and members of the Cabinet to do what's necessary to ensure that the country is kept safe for the next few weeks and that the U.S. has a "sane captain of the ship."

Facebook bans Trump from platform until after inauguration

Facebook is extending its ban on President Trump's account until at least after the inauguration, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement on Thursday.

"The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden," Zuckerberg wrote in a post on Facebook.

"We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great," he added. "Therefore, we are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete."

Wow...

Former Attorney General Bill Barr says Trump's conduct was "betrayal of his office"

William Barr, Trump’s former Attorney General, accused the President of “orchestrating a mob to pressure Congress” and went on to call his conduct a “betrayal of his office.”

In response to riots that took place at the US Capitol on Wednesday, Barr said in statement sent to CNN: “Orchestrating a mob to pressure Congress is inexcusable. The President’s conduct yesterday was a betrayal of his office and supporters.”

Schumer calls on Pence to use 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office

Presumptive Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office.

“What happened at the U.S. Capitol yesterday was an insurrection against the United States, incited by the president," Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement on Thursday. "This president should not hold office one day longer."

Schumer joins a growing contingent of lawmakers from both parties to call for Trump's removal, either by using the 25th amendment or through impeachment.

Yes, there were several Republicans that finally met a line they were not willing to cross... An incitement of violence by the President against the United States itself.

McConnell, Romney, Graham, etc. Others like Sasse have been a voice of reason for awhile on that side.

In the House it can be expected, as gerrymandering has lead to terrible quality of candidates, but the senators have no excuse. The 7 senators that objected, and still carried on with this charade after the violence are going to be remember as someone like Joseph McCarthy historically. Their legacies will be forever tied to this event.

They have basically ended their national aspirations as the majority of people are not cool with sedition by a sitting president, based on nonsense conspiracy theories. More than half the senators that were supposed to support the objection changed their mind after Trump lead a violent attack against the United States itself.

Joe Biden on the 25th amendment -

"It’s not a question of whether President Trump is fit for office. That’s been long answered," a person close to Biden said. "It’s a question of how much more difficult that would make it to rebuild the country."

This not a game. The President who just lead this seditious attack against the US still has the nuclear codes.

He needs to be removed from office. I am not sure how that is really even up for debate.
He also needs to be impeached and convicted, even if after leaving office.

That will permanent disqualify him from holding federal office again. We can't have traitors of the United States occupying the highest office in the land.

Letting Trump as command-in-chief for 2 weeks more is too dangerous for the US national security.
The man is clearly a wannabe dictator, and should be removed from office from yesterday.

Impeach and Convict. Right Now.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/06/opinion/impeach-trump.html

"Trump is too dangerous to leave in office for even another minute."

"The duty of the House of Representatives and the Senate is to reconvene immediately to impeach the president and then remove him from office and bar him from ever holding office again.

To allow Trump to serve out his term, however brief it may be, puts the nation’s safety at risk, leaves our reputation as a democracy in tatters and evades the inescapable truth that the assault on Congress was an act of violent sedition aided and abetted by a lawless, immoral and terrifying president."

You guys are funny.

What happened yesterday, which was lead by the President, was not funny in any way.
This is what you see in 3rd world countries.

It was a sad day for the country, but we will recover.

Donald Trump and the people who supported him to a point where this behavior was possible, and still are not willing to remove him, will have a stain on their legacies that will never recover.
