• The medal count is how American sportscasters, reporters, and viewers refer to the Olympic medal results. Medal count is essentially the term.
• A Google search for "medal count" returns 850,000 results
• Yahoo returns 10 million results
• Medal count was the #6 "Hot Trend" on Google Trends (on August 9th) and stayed in the top 50 for 6 days
• According to NBC, "medal count" is a top search term driving traffic to NBCOlympics.com (one of the world's top 100 sites during the Olympics
• Medalcount.com ranked as high as #2 for medal count searches on MSN.com and Live.com, #9 on Yahoo.com, and was #5 on Google as recently as 1 month ago (but dropped because there was nothing on the site at the time: content was first added on August 8th)
• Having medalcount.com gives go-to status and implied authority on the subject: it just doesn’t get more specific.
• The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics start in just 18 months
• The London 2012 Summer Olympics begin in 3 years, 11 months
• As Olympic web viewership climbs dramatically, major brands are building Olympic-specific microsites and buying out Olympics-related search terms. Olympic sponsors have deep pockets, as do the media covering the games
• Medal count does not violate IOC trademarks (as Olympicmedalcount.com does.

PM me for more details, including some interesting Google Trends and links/screenshots that verify everything above. Thanks.

It's worth noting that the next Olympics start in 18 months: Vancouver 2010.
