The nine-way fight for the .shop gTLD has raised $41.5 million at auction.

It’s the most-expensive reported new gTLD sale to date.

The victor was GMO Registry of Japan, which runs a few Asian geographic gTLDs and acts as service provider for over a dozen dot-brands.

GMO wanted .shop so badly it actually applied twice for the gTLD in the 2012 application round.

Well, that's a very costly purchase!

Seems like a very misleading thread title!

Well, that is a massive investment to cover. You know any decent terms are going to come with stupid registration/renewal fees.

Shop.com would probably (just domain) sell for $10-50 million range, so .shop for $41MM might be very good deal. I can easily see 3-10 million .shop registrations within 1-5 years, if priced $10 or under and that is revenue of $30-100MM out of which 20-30% could be net profit for the company.
