Enterprises have paid more attention to intelligence properties these days with the spread of internet world, and learned to protect their brand name in time in order to prevent troubles in the future. For the domain names that were squat by someone else, the enterprises either buy the domain name with high price or arbitrate the domain name through legal methods.

In this context, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the main judicial institution of domain name dispute, has released the data of UDRP dispute in 2015.

The data indicates that in the year of 2015, the number of domain name dispute lawsuit was 2,754. Compared with the data of 2014, the number has increased by 4.6%. Among all the UDRP cases, the lawsuits of new gTLDs took up 10.5%.

In WIPO’s report, the most common gTLDs of the new gTLD in the lawsuits are .xyz, .club, and .email. Among the all countries involved in the UDRP lawsuit, the US is the country with the most disputes, all 847 cases together, followed by France, Germany and the UK. The awareness of domain name protection is relatively more prevalent in these countries.

In the industries involved in the UDRP lawsuits, the fashion industry is the one cares most about domain names, taking up 10% of the total domain name disputes. After it there follows the banking industry and IT companies, each with a rate of 9% evenly.

It is reported that the increase of domain name dispute lawsuits is due to the increment of the total domain name number and the stronger awareness of domain name protection generated in the fierce brand competition nowadays.

It shall also be mentioned that WIPO is not the sole UDRP judicial institution. Thus the data cannot represent the whole situation in the world. But doubtlessly, the fire on the war of domain name protection is burning wild.

I wonder of the increase in disputes is because companies are becoming more vigilant with regards to their electronic brands or if this has increased because the amount of domains being registered has increased and also due to the amount of new TLD that have become available which makes it easier for people to cyber squat on an established brand
