Hallway sales: Further bidding in silent?

Were hallway sales final or will they be moved into silent auction for possible further bidding?

Listed as "Sold" on Moniker's website and in Monte's post - that doesn't seem to leave room as the others are "passed" and will be moved to the silent auction...

Heck no, dude, that be crazytalk. If the sign says live auction than live auction it should be.

The idea that failure to BOOK A ROOM for adequate time or maybe just a failure to do simple math (4 hours, 240 minutes, 280 domains... hmm... 1 domain a minute?) deterred a live auction in any way is MIND-BOGGLING. Seriously MIND-BOGGLING.

There ain't no excuses for that, man.

Minutiae, man, manifesting, molehills into mountains. Malarkey!

Technically speaking a live auction even in a hallway is still alive auction. So that point is gone. Next....

Why wouldn't they want to be involved? The reserves stay the same & most likely you have a bigger pool of potential buyers.

The reserves were for a "live auction" - not for a "silent auction" . Having been involved in various auctions over the years there is a very different scenario for each. I would expect to see different reserves for the different types of auctions.

The thrill of the chase in a "live auction" and the adrenalin pumping of the "bidders" in particular if the auctioneers do a correct job see product value soar - this will not occur in a flat dull silent auction.

Genrally "silent auction" values will be 50% or less of "live auction" values as you will get the Sedo style of bidder- throwing multiple low bids at every name- cannot happen in a live auction as "real" buyers would blow them away.

Very simply the auction was a tale of two halves. The first half was superb and got the adrenaling pumping and saw some big sales - the second half was not!- an error of judgement on behalf of the organisers compounded by other mistakes.

RJ - as a matter of interest can the "silent bidders" see previous bids :?

Other than being rude to the poster you replied to, you've completely ignored the discussion you started a page back (That apparently I finished?) - picking and choosing what you seem to think are "easy battles". I encourage you to offer ideas and even criticism, but without the cliche belittlements.

And "technically speaking"? Is that really the best argument to make here? The "live" or "silent" aspect of it isn't what was brought up as an issue - but rather any aspect of it that could be described as merely a marketplace for "reserve-priced" domains.

I say again - I am a Moniker supporter, I love their interface, and is still the best registrar I know - but the final minutes and anything that transpired in the hallway leaves MUCH to be desired. Had the auction ended at 8:30, the only thing I would lament is that some great names got "passed" that I wish would have sold (And oh yeah - that guitar music due to the later than expected start ;) ). Perhaps I am expecting perfection, which none of us can deliver, but that is a fault you can find in me, not in the position.

The poster came across with a point that what occurred in the hallway was not a live auction. I just pointed out that his point was completely baseless & inaccurate.

This could quickly become counter-productive, so I'll bow out - but that was not the point made, and if you think that saying something makes it true, then obviously you're right.

I am under the weather & don't feel like reading through sarcasm. Maybe the poster was being sarcastic but with a statement saying:

"Heck no, dude, that be crazytalk. If the sign says live auction than live auction it should be."

One could come up with the reply that I did.

No, I don't think like that. Thanks for assuming though.

Since the mod won't say it, I will.

You're rude and you suck the air out of the room. You rarely make clear points and I have only known you to be confrontational and egregious. Finally, you never seem to support your NP brothers.

You have the dubious good fortune of making my ignore list. What's that? I can't hear you...anymore. :)

Mr Tim,

Now I dunno if he is a .mobi hater or not, if he isnt then pardon me (since i dont want to read so many damn posts. I do believe HBK has been helpful during his stay at NP. So if someone disagrees with you, you ignore them?

Of course Mr. Tim put me on ignore cause i am a ".mobi flamer" :yell: :yell:

I have had my share of disagreements with the guy. Most of it dates back to 1&1. Since I was tired of seeing him obsess over them in every post. He didn't seem to care for the fact that I reported being a customer who never had a problem with 1&1.

Let him or anyone else ignore me if they would like. I won't let immaturity like that get to me in the least bit.

For the record I am a .mobi hater because I see through the fluff. Unfortunately if you don't swear by .mobi you must be in the wrong. If people only understood that most .mobi haters are trying to save you money. Most of the good stuff is gone & crap is registered & will lose money.

Screw it burn the cash away...

Well - that was an interesting read....soooo positive then so negative, speculation, assumptions, allegations, and kudos...I am sure confused.

Here are the facts folks - the reason 155 names sold out of 233 is because the list was extremely solid and scrutinized. We sold 67% of the names we went through....thats more than twice the great percentages from the last 3 events.

What did we not anticipate - a late start due to loss of power on projectors in the ball room. that was a conference service problem...which became our problem.

We did not anticipate such a high percentage of names selling which obviously take longer to close when there is that much bidding. we have been able to get through a list of 300 names in the last two events so that was unexpected as well.

We had a hard out of the room time of 6 PM which I personally begged for time extension and was given an extra 45 minutes. There was another planned event right after the auction sponsored by another company. The room was not rented...we were at a conference with a conference and session schedule that was back to back.

The hall auction was my mistake and was stopped immediately. only 6 names sold in the hall at or above reserve. Each seller will get contacted and let us know if they want to take the bid or put into the silent auction if they felt that was not fair. However, it was no different than having folks call out names in the room. Most of those domains would go at or close to reserve when that happens. Most sellers are also ok or even happy to get a sale.

Yes we learned that we need to make the list shorter and even more pristine which will result in fewer names in the live and more in the silent...maybe. that would mean that many of your names will not be considered for the live event.

All live auctions are subject to human error. Its live and we are all human. And yes we have learned so much from the first auction we created and it keep getting better and better...not worse.

Those of you with any sense will realize how good this auction (and the 5-10 others we will be doing over the next year), is for you, the value of your domains, the increased interest in our industry and investment in our industry. There were bankers, and investment companies, and VC's and private equity firms, as well as industry registries all present at this one. They all came up to us afterwards impressed as hell that we actually pulled this off yet once again.

So for all those disappointed that we did not get to your name or that your name was not sold, or not sold for a price that you thought...we really are doing our best at each of these. We are totally aligned with you as our customer and make more money when your names sell for more money. No one is screwing you or trying to. If you were asked to lower your reserve, it was for good reason. If we were that wrong then the domain would sell for that much more. This time, we were practically dead on what we thought each name would sell for and the reasons why.

Bare with us as we continue to improve the process and make it better for our whole industry. It will get better but there may be some adjustments along the way.

We are shooting for a live webcam or stream at the NYC event in June. The NYC auction is positioned to be great due to the publicity the event and the conference will receive.

All in all, I am happy as hell with the results given the challenges we faced. The silent auction will be rocking as they all will from this point forward.

For all those that want to participate in the next events - Casino Affiliate Auction in May, TRAFFIC in June, InterNext in August, TRAFFIC in October, WebmasterWorld in November and others, just email us. For those of you fed up with the process or if you do not want to participate, then do not. No one has or will force you to.

I certainly make note of all those who submit and then bitch when things don't go their way. that is not good for anyone. If you have constructive criticism, I am all ears, however, all those that just spap without the facts or even the experience to understand how to even put on one of these events........

We are psyched for the next events and we hope the majority of you are as well....as your domains just increased in value and became more salable whether you know it or not.

I never had a name in the Live auction so I won't comment
either way. Although it's very exciting to listen to :D

What I would like to say Monte is thank you for putting on such an event,
the exposure to our domains can only be positive!

I think it's a great event that will improve as it goes along,
everything new has kinks...

Kudos to you and your team!

thanks

I listened to it for as long as I could - eyes drooping.

And whilst its important when huge sums are involved to strive to provide a faultless system, people have to remember that this new auction service is a beta of a beta for Moniker. I.e. Dont expect Sothebys style professionalism from Guys who are still fresh at the game. If its adequate and beyond reproach - what s the problem?? Knowing Moniker, Im sure a seamless and efficient system is being worked on as we speak.

One thing you can be assured of is that because it was being handled by Moniker it would be as straight as youd get anywhere. Companies like Moniker dont spent millions of dollars building a reputation just to throw it away for a few average domains being sold on the QT in the alley.

Remember - Moniker is still the only registrar yet to have a domain hijacked from their system.

Thanks for the update Monte and obviously Namepros.com rates fairly highly in your priorities - good to see. :sold:

I have copied your reply to my blog, trust that is OK:? And I am sure we all look forward to the next event when hopefully my and other ex "live auction" names will get another chance. :|

Hey, If I didn't care, I guess you would not see repeat auctions and responses from our team. we are obviously here for the long haul....always have been.

Try to rally behind the things that will make everyone win and successful and they will be. We do not come up with this stuff to have you all lose money...its to put a stake in the ground and make our industry even stronger.

All good here!

Thank you for coming back - I hope my tone came across as I intended when I posted after your first post, but unfortunately inflection is lost in typing.

And just for the benefit of any who were wondering - I didn't have any names in the live or silent auction, nor did I submit any - although if I had and had they been accepted, I strongly suspect that I would have been pleased with the outcome; there are very few good marketplaces like what Moniker is doing. That being said,

The hall auction was my mistake and was stopped immediately. only 6 names sold in the hall at or above reserve.

I'm glad you agree that it was a mistake - we all make them - despite the apparent enthusiasm of the auctioneer or announcer (I can't make out voices on the broadcast as things starting getting noisy with the movement) with the "taking it to the hallway". Also glad to hear that the number was only "6", and kudos for stopping it before it did turn into something more negative.

Each seller will get contacted and let us know if they want to take the bid or put into the silent auction if they felt that was not fair.

Excellent. Yet again, I have no names in the mix, but I can think of no better way to solve the admitted mistake. Last I heard none of these overtures had been made, but I'm glad to hear they are coming/have arrived by this point.

However, it was no different than having folks call out names in the room. Most of those domains would go at or close to reserve when that happens. Most sellers are also ok or even happy to get a sale.

It isn't too much different than the "name calling ;)" in the room, admittedly (Although a little less transparent), but even the name calling at the end began to feel like the auctioneer merely listed the reserve as the start and then called the auction after only a couple of seconds. You've explained why, and I think we all understand the necessity of getting through as many names as possible due to the quality you had to offer, but at that point any bidder was given a great look into the reserve price without having to do anything but call a name. At this "name calling" point, there were a number of missed bids, upset bidders, and even a few attempts to restart auctions (None of which happened, if I understood the proceedings correctly.), which I feel highlights the problem with moving away from anything besides the traditional "Kick it in" auction format. Yet again, I'm playing armchair quarterback, so I have a hugely unfair advantage, but I'm trying to offer constructive criticism from the perspective of someone whose only dog in the fight is to see the auction grow and gain more exposure so that the rising tide lifts all boats. So yet again, I strongly advise that the auction stick to one format for the entire time, even if that means seeing only 1/2 or 1/3 as many names in the live auction portion.

All live auctions are subject to human error. Its live and we are all human. And yes we have learned so much from the first auction we created and it keep getting better and better...not worse.

Amen. And the goal of getting "better and better" is what I hope you continue to do by getting feedback not only from participants on the floor (Whose interests are for the most part all aligned together), but also from forums such as this one.

Yet again, I'm not trying to claim omniscience, only offering my opinions on the parts that could be improved/corrected. I know that you have a thick skin already from being in this industry, but I do apologize if anything was taken personally - my intended purpose was to provide constructive criticism, not offend. But as you have pointed out, we're human - not perfect, and I have most likely erred at some point(s) in my eagerness.

Continued best,
-Allan :gl:

Monte,

Thank you for your thoughtful and indepth reflection on the auction. I appreciate you taking responsibility for things and are working to make sure everything works out fairly. I too am still a Moniker fan and believe the next event in NY will even be better.

I apologize if I looked into things too much or overspeculated. I understand the logistical nightmare putting on one of these auction must present and I certainly appreciate having the opportunity to take part in such a highly publicized event. Additionally, it is always good getting more interest in the domaining industry, which means our domains will have a higher demand in the future.

I certainly make note of all those who submit and then bitch when things don't go their way. that is not good for anyone. If you have constructive criticism, I am all ears, however, all those that just spap without the facts or even the experience to understand how to even put on one of these events........
I understand this quote could be directed at me and again, I'd like to apologize if I've gotten my fact incorrect or let my frustration cause me to offer anything but constructive criticism. If you are in doubt about me, my previous posts on this board will demonstrate I am one of the bigger Moniker fans and have pointed business Moniker's way.

Again, I appreciate you communicating with us here at NP. Your communication has helped clear up any remaining rumors or speculation there may be about what occured and what will occur for the remainder of the silent auction.

Too bad Porn.com didn't sell, it would have caused quite a buzz in the Media ;)

appreciation and suggestions

Monte,

Thank you and to all the folks at Moniker for organizing this venue for our industry.

I listened to almost all of the auction via webmasterradio and you can only get so much without being there. It is likely that not all making comments have been to a live auction or fully understand what goes on behind the scenes to pull something like this off. Many details and nuances of the auction were only visible to those in the room.

From your and other posts here on NP I now personally have a much better understanding of the enormity of the task of paring down a list of 60,000 names from hundreds of sellers, keeping a room full of humans focused for more than one hour straight, the limitations and reality of time constraints at a rented facility, and the obvious conflict and sometimes fine line between satisfying the seller and buyer - both of which expect their perfect price. Sellers want and expect to get a high price for their "baby" and buyers want to find a steal. Their expectations are not always met but the market usually sorts most things out. The bigger the marketplace, the better the sorting.

Thinking about the auction, (BTW I had no names in the live auction but do have three names in the silent auction), I have a couple suggestions.
- Keep the auction length to two hours long or longer but with breaks or have morning and afternoon auction sessions, or day 2 and day 3 auctions. Each session would have equally good quality names.
- Have a list of "guaranteed live auction names" (200-250), AND have a list of "alternate live auction names" ready to go. Use as many as needed to fit the allotted time frame. Stipulate that all unsold names will enter the silent auction automatically.
- Let name owners submit two reserve prices - one for a live auction and one for a silent auction.
- Group a few similar names near each other.
- Promote several "featured" categories of names for each auction to draw in more outside interest. (bigger marketplace)
- Allow full viewing access to names in the silent auction to attract more bidders. (bigger marketplace)

Thanks again to all your staff for the tireless effort that it takes to organize and implement this type of event.

-acc
