Verisign Agrees to Freeze SiteFinder Service

Spaceship Spaceship

"Without so much as a hearing, ICANN today formally asked us to shut down the Site Finder service. We will accede to the request while we explore all of our options," said Russell Lewis, executive vice president of VeriSign's Naming and Directory Services Group. "During the more than two weeks that Site Finder has been operational, there is no data to indicate that the core operation of the Domain Name System or stability of the Internet has been adversely affected. ICANN is using anecdotal and isolated issues to attempt to regulate non-registry services, but in the interests of further working with the technical community we will temporarily suspend Site Finder."

uh, uh, they are now claiming it was a non-registry service, and that it did not have any negative impact on stability of Internet, etc.! What planet they live on? What are they smoking?

Wow, Verisign sounds like it's ran by five year olds in the bodies of executives. At least they're getting rid of Site Finder for now.

Umm....

Maybe it's me. Sounds like ICANN actually said "sort this shit out, we've had complaints all over the place, and are being pushed to take the .com and .net registra from you guys" and verisign said "umm, oh, well, in which case, we will 'temporarily' remove the service".

I think they were pushed to a point where they had to do something to counter act the negative market response from them doing this. The big players are now getting involved, and thats when they see the real $$$$$ being lost to competitors. :)

Yey the community! :)

At this moment, it is a temporary freeze, not a permanenet removal.

Still, it's great news indeed.
