Every day, billions of searches (also called search queries) take place online. These searches often include a variety of words and phrases made up of keywords that play a role in determining the search results provided by search engines. In late 2015, Verisign sought to understand whether or not having a keyword-rich domain name that shows up in search results provides any benefits over domain names appearing in search results that do not include keywords.
To help determine if there is a benefit to registering domain names that include keywords over those that do not, Verisign studied 11 million search query results from approximately 1.55 million search query sessions in the month of September 2015 from comScore’s U.S. consumer panel.
The domain names with keywords that overlapped with the search terms had a click-through rate almost two times higher than domain names without overlap. Um ... maybe because the matching words are bolded in the results? Something very obvious they failed to mention.

Hmmm what I found interesting was that .US alone shows up in search results more than 3 times that of all new gtlds combined.
As for exact matches well they have almost always outperformed in sem in my personal experience. Others have shown the same sharing case studies. Sem and seo are very similar so what works for one may most probably work for the other.

Wasted time on this case study. It is common sense that people who search for "casino" will click on Casino.com rather than GambleHere.com.

EMD is the best choice for any business when it comes to SEO, but there are many other benefits that this case study just proved. One of them is positive effect on CTR. When talking about premium EMD, then I cant see any reason why would a company refuse to own it if they can afford it.

An interesting read. EMD is still king and that's why domainers are killing it with Premium names.

and like enlytend mentioned "matching words are bolded in the results".
New gtlds also have their keywords bolded which would give them value in online marketing with the right combination, offline not so much that's why I think they can supplement your main website but shouldn't replace it. imo

Just want to add I'm not sure if the keyword to the right of the dot in a new gtld gets bolded, I was just assuming.
