VeriSign has rolled back the changes it made to its name service zones to ensure that any misspelled or non-existent .com and .net domains resolve to one of its own sites.

This follows an ultimatum from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to remove the changes by 6pm on October 4, Pacific Daylight Time.

In the ultimatum, ICANN president and CEO Paul Twomey said: "Failure to comply with this demand by that time will leave ICANN with no choice but to seek promptly to enforce VeriSign's contractual obligations."

VeriSign secures a majority of e-commerce transactions and communications, and serves as the definitive registry for .com and .net domain names. It also runs the "A" root server for the global DNS, one of 13 such root servers.

VeriSign said it the rollback would be temporary while "we explore all our options," according to a statement by Russell Lewis, executive vice president of the company's Naming and Directory Services Group.

they need to just giveup the registry already. I hope sex.com burns them hard enough for them to sell off network solutions and take most of their interest away from domains.

It should be awarded to a coalition of registrars, with profits spent to improve the internet infrastructure. The coalition can run the actual root servers in-house, or outsource the actual job to a 3rd party that's paid for actual services, not per domain.

Hey, don't laugh. It can happen.
