I believe only short and easy-to-remember domain names are sustainable, regardless of where in the world you live and which cultural background you come from.

Now that the Chinese domain market has become a hot topic, I myself want to understand this trend too. Is there any real meaning behind each domain name sold in China? Here, I'd like to share with you what I've found as I read the Chinese news everyday.

GZX.com
GZX can stand for 更自信 (even more self-confident) which can be used in many fields such as education, self-help, and even consumer products to raise your self image.

XLY.com
XLY can stand for 夏令营 (summer camp) or 新领域 (new field) which can be used in recreation and high-tech products.

China Mobi, may I ask: If you had to choose between a pinyin domain or a Chinese character domain which would you choose?
For example, would you choose 象.com or Xiang.com?
(For the benefit of non-mandarin speakers they both mean 'elephant')
The Internet is global and allows me to connect with the whole world, so I never like IDN if I have a better choice. Even acronym is better than long Pinyin words, for example Jing Dong is using JD.com, JD.id, ID.ru etc. instead of JingDong.com

@ChinaMobi
How do you see scope for LL or NN domains in lesser known ccTLDs in chinese market?

Thank you for sharing your opinion CM.
I have a follow-up question (assuming that's okay with you):
Generally, would it be reasonable to expect the pinyin.com to fetch a higher price than the equivalent IDN.com at a Chinese auction-house like 4.cn?

When eName stops writing news, there's no news to report to you. What's going on at eName?
So you can see how important eName is in the Chinese domain market. It's like there would be no evening news if New York Times stopped publishing news one day. Not possible in the US but China? It's an interesting world.

I constantly remind myself of three numbers: 600, 400, and 300. China and India have more Internet users than the US. China is already making new rules (volume buying, .cc, .xyz etc) about domain investment, so anything unimaginable in the west may happen in China. Soon we'll have India on the radar too. Remember investor Liu Xing (nickname) acquiring 1.cm for 1 million RMB in October?

I don't know. I never understand the merit of half-IDN-half-ascii approach such as IDN.com. What I do know is that the Chinese government is pushing the Chinese IDN.IDN adoption.

I don't use the eName site directly. My daily domain news comes from Baidu. It just happens eName provides 99% of the news source.

Investor Shan Ren(nickname?) acquired 4L domain names again, paying close to 900k RMB for the following four 4Ls.
8501.com
6207.com
3225.com
5397.com

So, each of them averages over 200k RMB. None of them contains the number 4. These names can be used for gaming, lottery, or directory sites.

Not long ago Shan Ren also spent 2m RMB to acquire more than ten 4L (.com?) domain names.

4L .com provide stability as investment asset and are actively traded. Recently investor Ming Jie(nickname?) also spent a total of high 6 figures to acquire the following two domain names.
6251.com
5157.com

At eName's recent auction, the following domain names were sold for more than 300k RMB each.
8653.com 310k
9661.com 340k

4Ls usually sell for 6 figures, or more if they contains lucky numbers 6, 8, or 9. For example, 1117.com was sold for 7 figures and 7997.com for 780k RMB.

What about a name.number extention? Why are all new exts either .LLL or .IDN? I have not seen any with .NNN.

I read Baidu news everyday and learn from domain names traded. It's all about rhyming. You say a number in Chinese and then try to find a Chinese character that is similar.

Me neither. .888 would be hot in China.

Quick question, what do you think would be the best acronym for "Lúnliú" (turn)?

Future trend in China: domain name becoming part of a brand

At eName's 10th Anniversary event, one key discussion was "Domain Name + Trademark", in other words domain name becoming part of a brand (trademark).

Domain king Wen Sheng CAI commented on eName expanding into IP trading services and said eName could become the No. 1 IP trading platform in China. He encouraged investors to put more thought into seeing domain name as part of a brand, the value of which would be infinite.

Investor Can Ming TANG also felt domain name+TM would become corporate brand in the future.

The number of TM registered in 2014 is 2.28m, and is poised to exceed 3m this year. To bank on this trend, eName has launched a TM marketplace on 393.com, allowing owners and buyers of TM to trade easily.

November registration of .cn reached 15m, almost 15% increase over the previous month. That's a massive growth on a monthly basis. eName's 18 RMB low price .cn promotion and the Singles Day sales might have contributed to this excellent result.

When you look at the pie chart, you'll notice .cn is way more popular than .com.cn -- 10.9m vs 2.3m registrations.

.cn prices have increased a lot and end user adoption is wide. Big names such as CCTN (cctv.cn) and Alibaba Health (alihealth.cn) all own .cn.

.cn will remain the dominant extension in China.

Domain investor Xia Wei Shang(nickname?) just bought 345678.com for ONE MILLION rmb!!!

The sale was brokered by eName.

He likes names with consecutive numbers. He also owns 23456.com and has sold 45678.com

This kind of names is popular because they are easy to remember and hard to misspell.

So you see, not every name is equal in price. Even a 6L .com can fetch a million RMB!

Can I expect to sell my 0424.com in the $13K-$15K range, with some patience (maybe in a few months)?
