@Kassey Lee reported this first in TLD investors.

Verisign made it into the list: http://www.miit.gov.cn/n1146285/n1146352/n3054355/n3057709/n3057722/c4377447/content.html
Yesterday was the watershed moment in the history of .com in China. Almost every Chinese news outlet reported that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) had approved Verisign as the registry for .com and .net in China.
What does it mean? I think .com’s position as the most prestigious extension in China will not change.

I will believe it when I see an official press release by Verisign, China, the MIIT or a figure of authority. I haven't seen that yet.

this is from the MIIT. check the url: .miit.gov.cn

according to the miit site there are 24 approved extensions in China at the moment. .com and .net are the only foreign extensions approved so far.

Not exactly correct.
So far all the approved gTLDs in China are:
com, net, org, edu, gov, biz, info, name, aero, arpa, asia, cat, coop, int, jobs, mil, mobi, museum, pro, tel, travel, wang, citic, ren, top, sohu, xin.
Clearly, .com and .net are not the only foreign extensions.

This can be confirmed by visiting http://www.miitbeian.gov.cn/publish/query/indexFirst.action

I got that information from this page. .mobi, .tel etc, were not mentioned. .Name is owned by Verisign and thus should qualify but only .net and .com were mentioned here.

http://www.miit.gov.cn/n1146285/n1146352/n3054355/n3057709/n3057722/c4377447/content.html

It would surprise me if .tel had been approved before .com. As far as I know one needs a local presence and business license to get approved. Would be surprised if .tel could qualify.

do you have a link to the page where it is stated that .tel etc. are approved extensions?

The link you mentioned (http://www.miit.gov.cn/n1146285/n1146352/n3054355/n3057709/n3057722/c4377447/content.html) only states the approved organizations/companies, which doesn't mean other extensions are not allowed in China. Actually, for end users in China, they are required to get the registered domain name "approved" before using them. The approved domain extensions are all listed in the link given in my last post (http://www.miitbeian.gov.cn/publish/query/indexFirst.action).

How to find whether an extension is approved (thus the registered domain name can be legally used) by Chinese government:
1. Go to http://www.miitbeian.gov.cn/publish/query/indexFirst.action ("MIIT" means Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the Chinese government and "beian" means officially getting documented)
2. Click the the 3rd entry from the last on left panel ("域名类型" means domain extensions). Until now there are 23 pages and all the extensions included can be officially approved and used in China.

I got this list "com, net, org, edu, gov, biz, info, name, aero, arpa, asia, cat, coop, int, jobs, mil, mobi, museum, pro, tel, travel, wang, citic, ren, top, sohu, xin" by visiting each page. Also you can see that almost all the ccTLDs are allowed. Any extensions not included will get disapproved in China, which are mainly new gTLDs, e.g., .xyz, .tech, .club, .site.

BTW, .tel is the first entry on page 16/23. So you are free to use .tel in China without any problems though few companies use .tel today.

so people in China can't see websites in other extensions like .cc , .nu . io etc?
