Hi all,

Per Namepros rules, is it permitted to PM an experienced user to inquire if they'd be willing to give a private appraisal of a domain? Is this something that happens or is it frowned upon?

Thanks.

Hello,

Generally, moderators do not get involved in direct message conversations unless one of the following has happened:
  • A member reported a conversation they are in requesting moderator involvement
  • An account has been flagged for review due to a potentially unrelated incident that requires all activity to be reviewed during an investigation for the security of the community
However, whether either of the above is applicable or not, the following rules apply to direct message:

3.1. Advertising of any kind is only permitted in marketplace sections (e.g., General Promotion) or by official advertisers where applicable. Unsolicited offers and advertising are never permitted in replies or direct messages.

6.1.23. Transactions must be carried out on NamePros.com via public or direct messages, otherwise NamePros staff will be unable to assist with any problems that may arise. Conversations transitioning to off-site mediums, such as email, cannot be regulated by NamePros staff. Rule 6.2.13 applies.

1.22. Do not directly refer or imply to message you for (new, supplemental, additional, etc.) information.

Conclusion:

It's generally best to only message a member that expressed interest in you contacting them via direct message. If you are wanting to contact another member to sell, trade, barter, advertise, or pitch something, you risk the chance of violating the rules outlined above in the event they report you or your account is flagged for investigation.

Perspective:
  • Contacting a member to sell, barter, trade, advertise = HIGH probability of being reported
  • Contacting a member to Buy something from them = Low probability of being reported
  • Contacting to buy, but then switching to sell (Bait & Switch) = High probability of being reported
We hope that information helps.
