Verisign has announced a 7% increase in .com prices to take effect on September 1, 2023. This follows a similar increase announced in 2022. The wholesale price for .com domains will increase from $8.97 currently to $9.59 after the increase and doesn't include ICANN's 18 cent fee.

Thanks for the alert. Inflation is rampant, so the increase is understandable in these economic times.

It's been known that Verisign was allowed to increase its fees by 7% in 4 out of 6 years. This is year 3. So expect another one next year and then we'll have 2 years without an increase, unless the policy will change.

When many people will realize that 70% of their portfolio is junk and begin dropping their beginner domains, I doubt Verisign will be happy.

Even though that would be very wise for many :) we first have to see whether that will really happen on a large scale.

This will be their downfall.

In a few years we'll reach the price point where run-of-the-mill domains with a small business focus will become unprofitable to register and hold at full price. Same for most invented brandables, two-word brandables, geo domains, and more..

New .com price increase on September 1, 2024:

Verisign has confirmed that it plans to exercise its fourth and final .com price-increasing power under its current registry contract, even as its domains under management continues to head south.

The company confirmed last night that it will increase the annual registration and renewal wholesale fee for a .com domain from $9.59 to $10.26 on September 1 this year (2024). It’s the last of the four times it’s allowed to raise prices by up to 7% in its current contract with ICANN, which expires in November.
