For ecommerce, the snippet is usually the least of their seo worries. More like duplicate and thin content issues and canonicalization. How they handle faceted navigation is a big issue - and many sites get it wrong. Sorts, filters, categories and subcategories - what to canonicalize and how can get really messy.
If you're designing an ecomm site, start with your basic architecture, decide where a subcategory or a filter is more appropriate, which data views should be indexed and which should not, make sure you handle things like query parameters and paging (and if applicable, internationalization) properly.
