From my understanding the smallest unit is actually known as Iota, similar to how the smallest unit of Bitcoin is known as Satoshi. This means the general term used at exchanges and for transactions from what I gather is a Miota (you trade in Miotas, not Iota). I bought some and it was referred to as Miota throughout the transaction.
