Up until recently, a company called Drawbridge had been using the domain hack
The company, which allows brands to have "seamless conversations with consumers," was founded in 2010 by a former Google employee. Since then, they have gone on to receive investment of over $20 million in two separate rounds, lead by Sequoia Capital. However, up until very recently, the brand has been based around a ".ge" domain name - the ccTLD for Georgia.
Drawbridge.com was acquired from an American individual who had owned the domain name since 1995. The sale was confirmed to me today. A price wasn't disclosed, but the previous owner did confirm that the sales price was "a bit over mid five figures."
In a recent interview I conducted with angel investor @jason calacanis, Jason said, "I think these domains [other TLDs] are great for starting out, but eventually you need to get the .com version of your name."
Drawbridge have followed Jason's advice perfectly: starting off on a ccTLD due to the fact that the .COM domain was either unavailable or out of their budget at the time, but once they had the appropriate funds, they acquired the exact match .COM for their business.
