I believe only short and easy-to-remember domain names are sustainable, regardless of where in the world you live and which cultural background you come from.

Now that the Chinese domain market has become a hot topic, I myself want to understand this trend too. Is there any real meaning behind each domain name sold in China? Here, I'd like to share with you what I've found as I read the Chinese news everyday.

GZX.com
GZX can stand for 更自信 (even more self-confident) which can be used in many fields such as education, self-help, and even consumer products to raise your self image.

XLY.com
XLY can stand for 夏令营 (summer camp) or 新领域 (new field) which can be used in recreation and high-tech products.

The company's full name in Chinese is:

广州大功将装饰工程有限公司

The name is too long, so they picked only the most important part of the name:

大功将装饰>Da Gong Jiang Zhuang Shì>DGJZS

There you have it.

After acquiring ZCB.com, domain investor Yang Bing ZOU once again grabbed two more LLL domain names in an auction.

CNX.com @ mid 6 figures

CNX:长宁县>Changning county

CN can also stand for "China" and X for "visit" or "heart"

CNX:中国行>Visit China
CNX:中国心>Heart of China

LLL.com domain names are considered hard currency, gaining wide popularity in China.

JBW.net @ mid 5 figures

BJW:北京网>Beijing net
BJW:比价网>Price comparison net
BJW:白酒网>White spirit net
BJW:保健网>Health care net

Some of Zou's recent LLL acquisitions include:

dwz.com @460k RMB
bqt.com @ mid 6
zcb.com @ 7 figures

@ChinaMobi do you think Chunjie.info ( 春节 ) is worth mid 3 figures?

春节(Chunjie) = Chinese New Year

Sorry, I'm not the expert, so I have no idea how much it's worth. But, for us, Chunjie is the most important event during the whole year, which means this name is associated with a lot of money.

The multiple identities of Chinese...

Domain investor Yue DAI just bought NXR.cn for mid 6 figures, after acquiring NXW.cn recently. These two domain names mean a lot to Dai because he's from Ningxiang.

NXW:宁乡网>Ningxiang net
NXR:宁乡人>Ningxiang people

Ningxiang is a county with a population of about 1.4m -- not really large by Chinese standard, but with high per capital income exceeding 12,000 US$.

These two domain names can be used as social networks for folks from Ningxiang, which implies commercial values.

Note that each Chinese usually carries multiple identities. Someone can be a Chinese, Hongkongese, Cantonese, and Hakkanese simultaneously. There are many Chinese associations in the world catering to the different identifies of Chinese.

@noonoo1 Nice to see you again. Personally I don't like geo+countrycode names. How about CardiffWales.com? Is it acceptable? But, Biz did very well in terms of registration number in Nov. Just amazing!

I don't know if this has anything to do with the Chinese Domain name Bonanza but...the internet has run out of 3L .US names. In April i remember seeing at least 100 on the expired domain name list. 3L .CO's are gone, and I saw only three 3L .ME. Interesting...

This surprises me, given that the .us space is so restricted.

It could be that investors (in general) have gone bat sh*t crazy.

Two months ago I acquired a LLL .us by accident (I forgot to strike it from my Pool list, and Pool, bless its little heart, snagged it, and I was the only chump, LOL) -- boy, was I ticked at having to pay $64 for a .us, but reputation is everything, so I honored my obligation.

Now it doesn't look so bad, although I still have to wonder if it has much value in the Chinese market.

:)

Are three-word Pinyin domain names acceptable?

When it comes to Pinyin domain names, the most popular one is one-word pinyin, followed by two-word pinyin and then three-word pinyin. Usually, three-word pinyin names are long and difficult for consumers to remember. But, the following case is different.

Qu Chao Gu is a P2P funding service which has received 100m RMB funding itself recently. It has a very interesting name.

QuChaoGu:趣炒股>Fun in stock speculation

Even though the domain name has three pinyin words, the total length is only 8 letters, which is still short enough to be easy to remember.

So, there is really no fixed rule. Each domain name must be judged on its own merits.

The company does not own the same name in .cn and .com.cn extensions.

Other well-funded startups using three-word pinyin domain name include XingKeDuo.com and ChiZiCheng.com.

None of the Pinyin words used as domain names that you've quoted have any meaning.
That's according to Google translation and Yable.com

Which translation utility confirms the meanings you've quoted?

@80-20 No translation utility is required. Names can be found on their corresponding websites.

Do Chinese use English words in domain name?

Take a look at what Alibaba has chosen for its two services.

阿里健康
Domain name is AliHealth.cn. The second part of the name is not a Pinyin word but translation of the English word "health."

阿里体育
Domain name is AliSports.com. Again, the second part of the name is not a Pinyin word but a translation of the English word "sports."

Are 5N domain names suitable for developing websites? Read the following commentary and decide for yourself.

=============
在前段时间,域名界有一种流行观点,那就是5数字不适合建站,只能是玩玩,只能做炒货炒炒,至于这种观点是怎么形成的,是不是有人故意混淆视听,目前还不得而知。但是以国人对数字的偏好而言,说5数字不适合做站有点言过其失,试想一下,车牌号,人家都抢好数字挂在车上。难道终端就不会把好数字挂在自己的网站上吗?

Roughly translated:
Some time ago, there was a prevailing view in the domaining circle that 5N domain names are not suitable for building websites. They said it's only a play thing for speculation. How was this view formed? Was someone trying to confuse the public? We don't know. But, if you consider the fact that Chinese love numbers, then it's really an exaggeration to say that 5N domain names are not suitable. Think about it. If we all fight to try to grab the best license plate number, why wouldn't end users use a good number for their website?
=============

More than 40 live websites built by end users on 5N domain names are listed in the story. Here are some of them together with their Chinese names.
