Especially I am noticing more traffic of some domains parked @ Dan.com.
Does more traffic usually result in sales? What's your experience with traffic vs sales?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Long years ago, probably 20 years ago, I promoted a low quality domain at Sedo.

It worked well. The domain was sold for around 1,000 euro to a European person. He made an offer in Euro (Euro was a new thing) and I countered in Euro. He accepted my counter offer and paid. I was not expecting he would accept and pay. The domain was PR4 or 5. Pagerank and some organic were the only good things with the domain. I would be very happy if it was sold for $300. For me it was a low quality domain. I bought it from expiring auction for less than $50 and few months later I sold it for around 1000 euro.

After my first promotion worked well, I paid for promotions for 10+ times but none of those worked. Since then I don't pay for promotions.
What is pagerank?

This calls for patient. You have to be patient enough and have faith that one day you too will testify to the goodness of the Lord.

Traffic could mean:
  • Real type-in visitors
  • Domain investors
  • Bots (everyone counts visits differently). I believe most companies are filtering most of the bots out.
With that said, I think most of the traffic you see in the stats are probably legit. You could say the more traffic you get, the more popular your domain is. Either people are doing type-in or the domain has historic backlinks.

This isn't 1998. Domain marketplaces and parking companies are smart enough to filter out most of the bad/fake traffic.

For me, more traffic definitely has not been associated with increased sales at DAN, but perhaps others have had better luck.

For sales, it probably doesn't make too much of a difference. But I think it gives you an idea of how consumer-popular the domain is based on the traffic since it can add value to domains.

Also for people who monetize their domain traffic, it's everything. If I bought a domain, parked it at DAN, and I see that it gets significant traffic. You can be sure that I'll test it out at a parking service like Bodis to see if it produces any revenue.

There seemed to be a disconnect between Bodis and Dan traffic and income. This partly may have been "Bot" related. For example, one ".me" domain kept getting a high amount of traffic on DAN. There were never any offers, and on Bodis there was no income.
Traffic generated by bots or backlinks can also be unhelpful on DAN. By their automated system for the portfolio display page, that particular domain kept showing up then at the top of the list. In other words, if someone clicked on the portfolio page, and see what is most popular, that darn one kept showing up at the top. I recall getting so annoyed by it, that I started clicking on the other domain's pages, just to try to get the other domains with more legitimate traffic up top of their list! Ultimately, I deleted the domain.
Filtering the "bot" traffic hopefully will become more of a priority with the marketplaces and registrars.

I'm sure most of the MPs and parking companies already have bot/fake traffic filters in place. They just use their own proprietary filters, so their stats will vary.

And remember in order to generate revenue on Bodis, the visitor needs to click on an ad.

For now, as to the question of whether traffic stats meaning anything to me, the answer is no. Sales and epc is the common denominator. The marketplaces and ad parking companies that yield results are what matters. Ultimately, those that deliver profits, not just traffic, get my customer loyalty!

Hi

unless your domains have existing traffic or get some type-ins, then any visitors you receive will mainly come from a marketplace where people search for domains.

and without traffic or some visitors, how will your names get sold or earn any ppc?

and, when time comes to renew, how will you decide which names to keep...

those that got some traffic but no earnings, those that got some visitors and earned some ppc or those that didn't get or earn anything?

imo...

The traffic stats appear generally unreliable to help determine which domains are worth keeping, other than obviously the ones that actually produced earnings.

The good news is that, for the domains I did recently cancel some domains (and did so before expiration). I see that, since my cancellations, others have renewed most of them with the registry. They can find out themselves, after paying Verisign, which are worth keeping.
