The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
This is usually if some domains are left in your cart from the previous week, i.e. if you switched computers or so. Since those are stored locally in a cookie, we've added this "one-click" functionality to remove them.

Thanks for the info, and at least now I won't have a heart attack when I see the button.

It looks like TBR registrars are taking turns pulling boners and not even getting in the domain race.

Last week a few of them crashed out hard due to the Daylight Savings change (it always gets at least one - go figure) but this week the vaunted WHC pulled a major boner by not winning a single domain, although they did sneak in 54 minutes late (!!) and picked up a few scraps. :xf.grin: :xf.grin:

We had a technical issue this week, yes :(

Understatement of the week, LOL

Hopefully you get it fixed up, as that goose egg you just gave me still hurts.

I just wanted to let everyone know there is a new .CA TBR drop-catcher in town, and it's a bit different format as everything ordered and won goes to open auction. Not sure if the site is fully operational yet, but there are some auctions running from older TBR wins:

CatchDrop: https://catchdrop.com/

Site seems simple enought to use, though not too impressed with TBR offerings. GLWS

Thanks for the list. I only have a couple .ca left. One I don’t know if I should let it drop or keep. Offsite.ca I have 1234 that I’ve owned for years as well.

wow... large number 1word ca names on expireddomainsnet today...sadly basically mediocre..

anyway.. got question for all u ca pros... I regged dapps,ca today.. and noticed dapp,ca showing a weird cira inquiry form... never saw one before and frankly didn't think that basically a lander was possible with em.. anyone seen it before?

1
•••
Yep, someone dropped a pile of grunt 1-words from their portfolio, likely due to the horrible economy and the double-whammy of the CIRA increasing renewal prices by $1 in September.

As for the CIRA Contact Form, that's the poor man's way of having a non-commission lander. Just forward your domains to the CIRA's contact page for buyer inquiries.

Where does .ca fall in terms of a price hierarchy for decent 1 word, generic-type words, compared to other extensions?

I recognize this will vary a ton depending on the keyword and how that keyword fits with .ca compared to how it fits with a different extension, but just in general I'd love to hear your observations...

Let's say words like Snowfall, Bonfire, Nightsky, Evening, Temple, Posting, where would you put the .ca compared to .com, .net, .org, .io, .co?

Obviously, I imagine .com is the most expensive for any of those keywords... Does .ca come in higher or lower than a .net, a .co, etc?

I'm always looking for a solid generic .ca or two but I'm not sure what wholesale or reseller prices are for them compared to other extensions.

.CA is really tough as buyers are usually dirt cheap and since it's geo-limited, they know the number of buyers for a .CA is microscopic compared to an open TLD like COM/NET/ORG/IO/CO/etc. so a lot play hardball.

That makes sales far more random and you never know what you're going to get for any given domain at any time. Again, this comes back to the incredibly small buyer pool, which in turn means that .CA wholesale prices are much lower than .COM.

Basically there are no pricing rules, and it's about the most random TLD I can think of, especially now with the economy so bad, inflation through the roof and interest rates constantly rising.

Let's say words like Snowfall, Bonfire, Nightsky, Evening, Temple, Posting, where would you put the .ca compared to .com, .net, .org, .io, .co?

To be honest, other than maybe Temple and Bonfire I doubt any of these would sell for any real money in .CA, at least not unless you hold them a very long time and get very lucky. Short, singular and business-positive words are what is selling and what will probably always sell.

But you have to pay through the nose at wholesale for those puppies. .CA is like a Catch-22 - you have to buy the top 1% of .COM domains in .CA to have a chance of selling them, but these will also cost you an arm and a leg and you may never get a bite.

As an example of this, there was a PILE of generic words dropped on this week's TBR with virtually no takers - this mid-range words stuff just doesn't sell in .CA. On the other hand, Huge.ca was very popular at auction.

@DomainRecap Thank you so much for your insightful reply, I appreciate it!

It's encouraging to know that something like snowfall, nightsky, etc might be attainable as I'm looking for something generic like that.

I'll keep my eyes open, hopefully the randomness factor rewards patience.

If you want to buy domains for development in Canada, then it's a good place to look, but as for investment, buying at or near the top-end of the scale is really the only way to make consistent $$$ in .CA.

For example, I owned less than 20 domains at MyID, but these are all premium wins I had to fight for and pay real money at auction but I've sold 4 of them over the last 12 months. The STR and ROI is very high on these.

My midrange wins have a much lower STR and lower prices/ROI, while my $20 "lottery tickets" are a waste of money and are probably breaking even, so I plan to cull the losers out this year, due to the CIRA price increase.

It's pretty obvious the big money and big demand is almost entirely centered on the big .CA domains, even though a lot of my "lottery tickets" are 1-words, first/last names, and compound words that would sell for serious money in .COM.

It's just a totally different market - like night and day due to the significant gap in the number of potential buyers. Here's a great stat: Canada's population is equivalent to 0.48% of the total world population.

Due to this, I am "raising the bar" and concentrating far more on the top 0.5% of the ".CA expired domains that would sell in .COM", while still taking a few chances on some tweeners.

Please note that the CIRA board elections have started and that you need to be a member by the end of the day tomorrow, Sept 6th, in order to vote in the elections later this month. Every .CA domainer should be a member and vote to represent their interests.

The current phase is the "Show of Support" phase that allows member nominated candidates to move on to the next phase.

Hi, I need a seller broker for this - compass.ca

Some of my companies of prospects;

- compass-canada.com (The Canada arm of Compass Group; The world leading provider of food, hospitality and support services.

- compasscard.ca ( The smart card for fare collection of Metro Vancouver, BC. Managed by translink.ca.

- compass.com (A global real estate company that may need it for her Canada base)...and others you dig up from your research.

Anyone that can help @Frank Michlick

Thanks.

Thank you so much @DomainRecap for this valuable experience-based summary of how you see the market.

Other than the slight rise in holding cost related to renewal, do you have a good feel for how the market now is compared to say a few years ago in .ca retail sales? The number of sales on NameBio for .ca is small enough statistics hard to say much, particularly where most do not get reported.

I think it would be very good if someone set up a marketplace specifically for .ca names. Yes, I know you can sell them through Afternic, Dan, Sedo, but I mean a Canadian based just .ca market. Any chance it is on the horizon as something WHC is considering, @Frank Michlick?

While we don't have a marketplace like this in the works yet, our most recent change to make auctions public (and pre-drop bids non-public) would certainly be one of the first steps to enable and allow third party listings on our site.

No problem Bob. I just did a quick analysis of my sales over the past 2 years and decided to pass along some general info on where I see the .CA market being right now.

I think the main theme is that in order to sell any .CA domain at retail for serious money, you also need to own or buy ultra high-quality domains, and for any new new acquisitions, that means spending serious money at wholesale. It's a tough market to crack sometimes, mostly due to the limited number of buyers.

The increase in the .CA renewal price didn't really worry me in terms of monetary expenditures, but it did get me really looking at my portfolio and dropping some losers that I only kept out of habit. I felt I could drop these domains and use that same money to buy better domains on the TBR or hand-reg TBR leftovers. This was actually a good exercise brought on by the .CA renewal increase, that I hope will drive up the quality of my domain portfolio.

In terms of sales, the Summer was terrible (zero sales for me since late-June) and in addition to the usual summer lull, I really feel like the poor economy, inflation, high interest rates, carbon taxes, etc. are really starting to take their toll on businesses, who are currently just trying to stay afloat rather than spend extra money. The high interest rates definitely have an adverse effect on startups and our oligopoly-based economy certainly doesn't help either.

I did stay the course and continued to buy .CA domains during the summer months when I saw potential deals, dipping into my war chest and sticking to my overall strategy come heck or high water. Domaining is a truly random business, feast or famine, and you need to maximize the good times in order to plan and prepare for the bad.

September has been a bit better and I've made a couple of sales, though nothing Earth-shattering. But it certainly feels good to replenish the war chest somewhat, although I'm still down from where I was in June. Hopefully the rest of 2023 maintains an upward trend.

Thanks so much for your detailed reply. I really like this line that applies to all domaining.
Thanks again,
