Hey,

now that GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is so hyped,
and news GPT .com sold for over $40k,
chatgpt.com valued at $29 bio. recently,

its maybe time to have a small but dedicated thread for GPT.

Do you own any names?

Do you think domains related to GPT may increase interest and demand?

Custom GPT's? YES! WORD + GPT names might see an uptick IMHO. Last I checked OpenAI had applied to trademark all the way up to GPT-7 last I checked. Not going anywhere anytime soon.

OpenAI is moving with incredible pace, and their recent demo day set a landmark in AI development. There was one topic that I find highly relevant from domainer‘s perspective…

Some commentators see an infliction point similar to the introduction of Apple’s AppStore: anyone will be able to build and sell custom agents for chat gpt. The AppStore created its own market and micro economy, is turning over Billions, and there is no reason why the market for personalised ai assistants should stay behind. Knowledge work will change dramatically, and it’s different niches and contexts will each have their specialised agents. Sam Altman built a custom agent in 4 minutes at the latest demo days, and even very complex ones can be done fast and without coding experience.

It is evident from the last demo day that OpenAi is set to use GPT for its branding. imho, this is terrible for their marketing and great for us domainers, also reflected in the recent uptake in GPT related sales.

It all comes down to the last question- will OpenAi get the exclusive rights for GPT, given that it has been already used as a general descriptive term by the time of their TM filing..? (Try putting the 🧞‍♀️ back in the bottle, no f.ing way)

There is more nuance to it ofc, like the various competitors and their stores etc, but the outlook for gpt domaining still remains imo: the advent of numerous custom agents, all in need of naming & differentiation…

But again these are just my thoughts, and who am I to predict anything of this complexity even slightly correct… ;) the future is exciting!

Thanks for these thoughts - all very interesting. It'll be interesting if OpenAI continues to use "GPT" in its branding even if they're not able to get the US trademark for that term itself.

Still, I can see a point to what they're doing. After all, they'd still have the trademarks in the foundation models (GPT-4, etc.) and the most famous product (ChatGPT), so it could still make sense for them (while also being good for developers who want to use the term).

(I wonder if they'll reconsider their "brand guidelines", though...which (completely separate from trademark issues) current says that if you use "GPT" in your name you won't be allowed to use OpenAI's products as a base...)

Hey Friends,
do you think GPT will cause a Trademark issue?
If I just search for GPT, as Word-Trademark (not with Logo), Registered and Pending, i get pretty much results:

If i break it down to the Niche of 42, which is the main one for tech - i get 93 Results - out of them 16 are already regged

It seems indexgpt .com has been sold. The domain was listed around 100k. There is no information yet on whether the name was sold for more or less.

In May, JP Morgan announced that they are developing an AI tagged 'indexgpt'.

Indexgpts.com and
Gptbrand.com are both available for acquisition.
