How to make two consecutive posts without merging them?

Often I want to post twice in the same thread, on slightly different topics - e.g. answering someone else's question, then asking a new question of my own. Is there a way to do this without getting the second post merged into the end of the first, other than waiting for someone else to post in between?

I think if you wait a certain amount of time, it makes a second post, but otherwise it combines it. There really isn't much of a reason to make another post if you're the most recent poster.

On a small thread like this one, I agree. But on the big Sticky threads, there are lots of sub-conversations going on simultaneously. If I want to reply to two people on different topics, or ask a completely new question, I don't want the two topics mixed up in the same post.

Just quote one person and respond directly underneath, then do the same thing for everything else you want to respond to. Most people won't be confused by that.
