There might be other strong reasons people would want to select zero. I imagine affordability, for example, would be one of the top ones, especially for those with leaner budgets and pockets.

I’m wondering: wouldn’t it be better to expand the zero option or just leave it open-ended?

Given the free options available there's no reason to ever pay for one. DotDB, Namebio, Google Trends (if used creatively) gives you all the data you need to negotiate a fair price for the domain you're selling.

Pay for Namepros? Now I'm curious, I didn't know you could pay for it. Why pay?

I agree with @MKA . The free versions are good enough for me.

besides the benefits, the tiny small monthly amount is a form of support for something I benefit from

People noway expect everything is free and don't understand there are some people working to make it happen and expect to receive some type of income.
In reality the only thing you can get it for free is computer viruses.

If a useful tool costs money I pay, but if they offer it for free I don't pay. Pretty straightforward. I don't "expect" anything.

As for the owner of Namepros.com, they get advertising and affiliate income, and they are willingly offering membership for free. Should I feel bad about accepting their offered terms? LOL.

I do pay for a few services. While I totally agree that it's not a necessary condition in order to get decent names, but simply you cut to the chase in many aspects, saving many hours of work. With that free time you can make more money, or simply enjoy your life outside of your domaining.

So, at the end of the day you gaining much more than you pay )

Does anyone know a tool where I can look up who previously owned a domain after it was dropped? Domaintools has such a tool, but they charge $99 p/mo - which is crazy talk for me to access just that one tool.
