Under what circumstances would you consider purchasing a .info given its low resale value. Assume I'm not talking about high-value words like casino, poker, etc. but words like memorial.info, table.info, etc.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Although .info was launched earlier, it was poorly regulated and there were many illegal websites in use, reducing the value of info.

for a while, on launch, I thought it had a bright future, but I also thought the same about .biz. Ah the days of the novice domainer and our own mini-Ntld launch.

I would still use an .info for a personal project and a very limited audience, A local event, So this wouldn't really be intended for the general public. Certainly wouldn't register generic wording with the knowledge of a NO-chance sale. Almost cries-out Scammer, if it was anything to do with money, property, investment etc etc

[city].info domains are pretty cool
Perhaps also some other category-defining keywords, such as traffic.info or nutrition.info
And of course info.info

Definitely not commercial keywords like poker or casino, what do they have to do with info?
You should treat .info like a nTLD, both sides of the dot need to form a logical phrase.

Depending on your target audience, solid single word .info domains still do the trick.

Ngtlds definitely took a toll on .info but its an extension recognised by a broad audience.

As an investor, cost of renewal is the biggest downside. Keeping a brandable two worder in .com is cheaper with a higher sales probability.

I still own close to 400 .info domains and they're profitable after all this time. Roi is lower but as long as it's profitable enough I won't walk away.

Back in the beginning there was not much after .info to buy.

I’ve built countless celeb, travel and niche hobby related websites where .info fit perfect.

idk, actual INFO-related subjects works wonders.
for example, everyone uses javascript.info

Thanks for weighing in. Agreed with most points and I own probably too many .infos but I own them not expecting them to enrichen me but as either toss-ins for deals or just bc of the keyword. The renewal cost is definitely unreasonable given its reputation.

Back in the day when Affilias was looking after .info, they really put their hearts into getting the word out to folks who could use it. But as time went by, they started focusing on a bunch of other TLDs they had on their plate. Then, when Donuts took over the reins from Affilias, it seemed like .info didn't get much love or attention anymore, leading this valuable TLD to sort of fade into the background.

Like some people have pointed out, .info was dreamt up to be a special TLD aimed at websites that have something really useful to offer, whether it's about a specific field or topic. If it gets the marketing push it deserves, I truly believe it could shine and reach its potential once again.

Given the versatility and depth .info can offer, there's a ripe opportunity for Donuts to revitalize this TLD. By leveraging innovative marketing strategies and collaborating with content creators and industry leaders who prioritize disseminating knowledge, .info can reclaim its position as a premier destination for information-rich content. The key lies in reconnecting with its original purpose - to serve as a beacon for those thirsting for knowledge and clarity in an ever-complex world. With the right push, .info can emerge not just as a TLD, but as a symbol of trust and depth in the digital age.

Maybe Wikipedia is something else that has taken the shine off .info

You wouldn't register money.info, property.info or investment.info?

The .INFO is beginning to split into two TLDs due to the higher priced renewal fees. There's a discounted TLD and what is almost a brand protection TLD in one. Some single keyword domain names may be more valuable but it was the initial free domain names offer that set .INFO on a boom and bust cycle. It was the original bulk discounter gTLD. It still has a strong core of registrations.

OK, You caught me on that one, I should have clarified better. And I agree on the City names as well. But may I counter - Would you book a Holiday on a .info site ??

Over time , my junk folder fills-up with dozens of so called investment opportunities, all centralised around our major city of Birmingham for some reason and mostly with investment/development name .info. None appear to be genuine businesses just scammer lures. Info just seems to lend its self to the "take-a-look-mister" Brigade.

Ps now you can mention where I did say info works ;)
