I am interested to see other opinions of .net in 2023. I am curious about how people see it today.

I am investigating a theory that .com are overpriced and that .net are underpriced.

I am interested in the #DotComVSDotNet opinions.

Hi

I’m quite new in domaining , but in my opinion .net is a dinosaur.
With time it will disappear, except 1 word killer domains of course.

I am hoping to breathe new life into .net. I am selling a business model for buyers groups to buy at wholesale prices. I am calling this form of shopping #Netting due to the #OneToMany relationship in buying in bulk in wholesaling. I am doing this based on the fishing analogy:

Lining in fishing - #OneToOneRelationship
Netting in fishing - #OneToManyRelationship

I believe that my business model is disruptive enough to warrant a new domain extension. What I am starting is what I call:

#ADanceBattle

This is:

#DotNetVSDotCom
#NetVSCom
#LinersVSNetters

I am pitching the idea that we reserve .net domains for buyers groups. As most businesses are liners, the buyers groups are the netters. I think that buying at wholesale prices is very attractive to many people. Learning the skills to save thousands of dollars every year is very attractive to those who don't have a lot of money. My discussion with people is that many of the upper middle class don't like my business model because lining is more convenient to those who are prepared to pay a bit more. However there are millions of people around the world who want to save money with wholesale prices and are willing to learn new skills to save money.

Hence, I am starting a #ClassDanceBattle. I have started the #NetVSComDebate this week. I am expecting this discussion to be a lot of fun. I am not investing in .net domains or .com domains. I am a consultant, not a trader. I believe that I have a strong case that #OneToManyShopping is necessary to attract the wholesale prices that are attractive to millions of people across the world.

.net may be a dinosaur and I am presenting the case that it may be a dinosaur that is being overlooked.

Dear all,

TLDR;

My Assumptions:

  1. Fraud / Cybersecurity, potentially decrease in .com Domains "Are they as safe as I thought?"
  2. Saturated Market of .com Domains, which are short and excellent and usable for companies in Emerging Markets
  3. Penetration of Internet Availablity Worldwide (which goes hand in hand with the point before
  4. Increasing Registrations of .NET Domains, while.COM Domains are decreasing -.ORG is at the same level right now

I don't think you, @GoKaizen; at least, I see it differently. Sure, .COM Domains are the most used ones, following Statista Premium (Germany's biggest Statistic Platform), but at the same time, other Domains are rising while they are going down. We had a Thread on NamePros. Let's decide which top-level domain (TLD) you prefer for your new tech brand. At least 3/4 of the people said .com, which is quite apparent. You trust them, you know them, they are well-established.

In General

This is straightforward; as we know, .com domains are the TLD of "trust" for everyone. I read an article (I can't find it) that people would rather trust a .com shop than any other Extension.

But now let's have a deeper look at the evolving new gTLDs, their distribution (Top Leading), and also the figures of registration that are increasing

Leading new generic top-level domains (gTLD) as of June 2022

statistic_id569356_leading-new-gtlds-2022-by-market-share (1).png

ntldstats.com

Conclusion: In June 2022, the leading new generic top-level domain (gTLD) was .xyz, representing 16.71 percent of the gTLD market share, translating to about 5.05 million registrations. Following this, .online emerged as the second most prevalent gTLD, capturing 7.13 percent of the market.

Okay, now we have our baseline and Status Quo, but what does it have to do with .NET Domain Value, etc.?

My Assumptions:

  1. Fraud / Cybersecurity, potentially decrease in .com Domains "Are they as safe as I thought?"
  2. Saturated Market of .com Domains, which are short and excellent and usable for companies in Emerging Markets
  3. Penetration of Internet Availablity Worldwide (which goes hand in hand with the point before
  4. Increasing Registrations of .NET Domains, while.COM Domains are decreasing -.ORG is at the same level right now
  5. Way forward

Let's have a look at Point 1.

Distribution of top-level domains used by phishing sites in 2022

The following Diagram seems to be straightforward. Most people already know how to detect phishing and Scam Links: Typos, wrong Logo, wrong spelling, etc.
If you click on the sender's E-Mail (at least) on phones, a few years ago, you could directly see that it was a fake E-Mail with cheap TLD (personal experience)

Spam and phishing in 2022. ➡️ In case you have time, this Article is worth reading.

Conclusion: In 2022, around 18 percent of phishing websites operated under the top-level domain (TLD) of .com, making it the most familiar environment for such activities. The .xyz domain ranked second, utilizing roughly 14 percent of phishing sites. Following these, the .fun domain was employed in nearly eight percent of phishing attacks. We see that .com Domains are not always the non-plus-ultra regarding reliability. Older adults who never bought from .info or .shop Domains had more trust in .com - which was and is almost the case. I will be surprised. Hackers and Scammers are not Script-Kiddys like in the past 20 years.
It's no longer hard to copy a Website 1 to 1 and implement a payment gateway; Most casino sides do it. No, I don't mean Wirecard as Payment-Service-Provider; that's a different case, though.

Okay - Now we have a little Breakdown of why .com Domains are not the best option anymore; let's go deeper.

Countries with the highest internet penetration rate as of Oct'23

As we all know, the World Wide Web has not developed as much as in Western countries—nevertheless, Emerging Markets like India, etc.

statistic_id269329_internet-penetration-rate-worldwide-2023-by-region.png

As you can see, we are by far more developed - but that is something everyone knows; it's more or less an intro that I want to say regarding domains:

Leading online markets based on internet penetration rate 2023

Published by Ani Petrosyan, Nov 1, 2023
As of October 2023, Norway, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates lead the ranking of countries with the highest internet penetration rate, all recording 99 percent. The worldwide internet penetration rate as of October 2023 was 65.7 percent.

Most connected regions

According to the most recent observations, Northern Europe ranked first among global regions by internet penetration rate. The share of the population accessing the internet in this region was over 97 percent. Western Europe ranked second, followed by Northern America. Overall, the internet reach was higher than 80 percent across all European regions, as well as Northern and Southern parts of America.

Unconnected populations

Despite having the biggest online audiences worldwide, India and China are also the markets with the highest number of individuals not connected to the web. Regarding the share of population without internet access in worldwide markets, North Korea ranks first, as the internet in the country remains blocked for most of the general public as of April 2023. South Sudan had nearly 93 percent of its population unconnected, followed by Somalia, with 90 percent.

Mobile internet penetration worldwide in 2022 by region

This one is a bit older but still reflects MUCH more development regarding the Internet, thus domains. The market penetration. When I worked for Management Consultancy, we developed platforms for clients that were "mobile first" & "responsive mobile design." Nowadays, it's "cloud first"; Technology is disruptive. I don't think that. AI will keep the hype, or probably ".io." Excellent for start-ups, but in the long run, for credibility, the "old" Generic TLDs are still the ones to choose.

Global mobile internet penetration 2022, by region

Published by
Petroc Taylor,
May 2, 2023
As of 2022, mobile internet was accessible to 55 percent of the world's population. Penetration was highest in Europe at 85 percent, while North America stood at 83 percent. Only 23 percent had access in Sub-Saharan Africa, while the region had a high usage gap of 60 percent. The usage gap metric illustrates the share of the population covered by mobile data networks but who do not have access due to barriers such as affordability or a lack of digital skills.

Question to the Community(Experts)

What the hell is going on with those silly .xyz Domains? That sounds like a personal scam; I don't know what the use case of those will be. From my point of view, the TOP gTLD will remain, probably not .mobi - but that's a different Story. 🤣

1699787502760.png

GoDaddy is making big money on those 🤑
Well, that's offtopic, maybe there is already a Thread - I just noticed it.

Final Thoughts

The current underutilization of top ".Net" domain names aligns with a strategic foresight, anticipating a shift in the digital domain landscape. This trend is particularly relevant considering the burgeoning internet penetration in developing countries. As these nations advance digitally, there's an impending demand for domain names, positioning .Net as a prime candidate. This preference stems from its established reputation for reliability, coupled with the saturation of .Com domains. Consequently, .Net domains stand to gain significant traction, driven by emerging markets seeking credible and distinct online identities. This underscores a calculated anticipation of domain value appreciation in line with global digital expansion.

I have shifted my attention to .pink instead of .net to build my business model around. It is easier to build around a less established domain extension particularly as women do around 70+% of the shopping. I am still calling .net as a potential domain extension for my business model and I am calling my business model netting as a nickname. I have bought a couple of .net domains in the last week including VURG.net.

If you had a.pink it would have a far lesser chance of ever selling than VURG.net.

NET is less popular because optimally it either means "network" or "relating to networking", but it is also used as a catch-all when nothing else is available, as with XYZ. A difference being that XYZ is a retarded fad with a promotion team behind it, and is rarely ever used in the only way the extension actually means anything (as a weak competitor to .INFO). You'd be hard-pressed to find any name with 5+ TLDs for which one of them is not a .NET.

.pink is horrible, as is most new TLD's... (IMO relax) I still feel like the whole .xyz thing was a huge scam, it's one of the ugliest extensions ever. Lets say I got a new TLD and I told someone "hey check out my website at website.tech"... ill bet 85% of people will go to websitetech.com instead... .net is classic like .com and .org... to me they are the only 3 I will spend money on, same with any business I have seen around me... Another example: When the owner of "TimsCoffeeShop.com" is asking "$850,000"... what's tim going to do? He's going to get the .net, unless tim studys domains all day, he has no idea about timscoffee.shop, nor will he buy it, because he is used to .com, .net, and .org... Maybe another few generations and they will take off more, but i'm only in my 30's so its going to take a bit... just my take...

There are hundres of new TLDs which might TLD fatigue. I've heard people trying to recall the correct TLD - was it .xyz, .app, .inc, .club, .info, or .tech? If words are found that include the TLD then those might become popular because the TLD is built into the name. Someone(s) has thought of it because I've gone through every likely keyword ending in "com", "org", "us", etc. and they've all been registered. I'm working on good words ending in "net" now.

I've replaced all my .com domains with .net domains. I think .com is overpriced and overused and .net is undervalued. I am anticipating big shifts in this space in 2024 and later. I have decided not to bother with .pink at this stage. I think that I have found good quality .net domains to work with.

IMO If you replaced it with .org it would be better than .net .

COM costs less than NET, and a TLD getting a lot of use means that people actually want it, which is what actually drives value. I guarantee nobody else had to think about whether to buy .PINK. You should get out of this business and either focus on your family or focus on having a family, whichever applies to you.

I will always trust “.net” over “.xyz” new ngtlds.

You cant spell “internet” without “net”! —Also, .net since 1980’s. Trust!

Slideshare.com & He.com both re-direct to .net. (Only 2, i know of)

Mom uses “edreams.com” to get cheap tickets. edreams.com re-directs to “edreams.net”!

This is cringe advice. And .net is my #2. —I know you mean well, sir.

You dont replace “.com” with “.net”

Use “.net” as #2 placeholder until maybe 1 day, afford its .com —This is my advice. Good luck!!

I am investigating a theory that .com are overpriced and that .net are underpriced.
I'm of the opinion that the reverse is true. Every notable business uses the .com, which has set a precedent. In fact, a lot of people don't even realize that something.net i a domain.

The way I see it is that you have .com and .com-alternatives. If someone is "okay" with a .net they'd also be "okay" with a .blue or .online. Because the prestige of a .com doesn't really matter to them that much. Which limits the demand and aftermarket.

For me .net is stuck in the last decade. I am gradually letting go every .net that I haven't yet sold. The renewal price was helpful with this decision.
