Don't be fooled by the naming, these aren't "versions". It's just a clever name, like "hey we're the next version", but they can't use 3.0 or 4.0 because those are already the names of real thing. Realistically, Bitcoin has potentially high fees when usage is high, plus very limited utility (it doesn't support smart contracts), so it's not really the ideal token for any future vision of the web, which is why I think this will not be anything in the long-term.

Apparently. Didn't take long for people to abandon Web3.0.

I'll believe in 3.0(or are we just going to skip to 5.0 now?) when I see regular, everyday people that aren't the most tech-savvy start using those browsers or extensions. Otherwise, as you mentioned, it's all hype.

Interesting discussion. Thanks for starting it @Johnjohn1992, and thanks @kair for really helpful explainer.

As much as I admire what Jack D has accomplished, I don't agree that basically doing what Web3 is talking about achieving, decentralized, permissionless, etc., but with Bitcoin rather than (probably) Ethereum, warrants calling it Web5.

Will be interesting to see how things develop.

I went searching and surprised how web5 seems to be already registered in many, many TLDs, even obscure ones.

What this looks like is that these Web3 and Web5 guys are trying to hype their ideas up to get investors to give them a boatload of money. But it also looks like registrars are benefiting here as well. Seems you don't get rich anymore with hard work alone. Millionaires are made through injection of cash from venture capitalists and seed funding.

I think that it's never up to us to determine whether or not we are good people. It's up to the people that surround us to determine it every time. The fact that you “feel“ good about the things you do doesn't automatically make you a nice person.

Having said that, I personally try to be as good as I can towards the people I know and care about and it's still not that easy.

web3 has become an acronym for:
nft, crypto, tokenization, VR etc.
(or simply another word for metaverse).

web5 might become an acronym for:
safety; decentralized, anonymous identity, "own your data" etc.

Guys, there is enough place for both buzz words to exist next to each other.

(and as I said, web5 fulfills a quite important niche).

I agree with what has already been said by @bmugford and others. The number of web5 domains listed on DAN has already risen to 3,532 in a short period of time. This should be more than enough for mankind. Most of these domains will remain for sale forever and eventually expire. Be very careful folks, especially newbies in our wonderful profession.

"Web3" has 14,022 listed on Dan.com, and (30) total reported sales.

For reference purposes let's look at random terms on Dan.com -

"Wedding" has 15,559 listings. "Wedding" has 1,224 reported sales on NameBio.

"Real Estate" has 19,016 listings. "Real Estate" has 1,562 reported sales on NameBio.

You can see the difference there. Most of these type of registrations are donations to the registry/registrar.

99.9% of domain regs are a waste of money. So yes, it is very understandable that almost everyone is wasting money (generally speaking).

If you know what you are doing you can still make a killing regging domains. There are plenty of people here on NP doing exactly that.
