Which will you choose if the rest of the extension has been taken or just not exist? Which is worth more?

very much true.. co.in domains could be considered as premium atleast in someway or other.. while i dont see a ".biz" as premium at any rate.

biz is usually well associated to business related sites while co.in could be hard.

first bet for a domain name is dot.com, but when it comes to type co.anything is more likely people type co.uk

co.in is great if you live in India, have Indian related stuff or just matter of pride, all valid reasons to go for it, but not to consider it premium
(no ofense or racism either)

Actually quite a few companies have purchased .co.in / .in who do not have businesses in India but wish to market there product/s to the indian market good examples of these are the search engines like google.co.in and yahoo.co.in etc also giants like cisco.co.in, ebay.co.in
http://www.yahoo.co.in now redirects to http://in.yahoo.com/
Both http://www.cisco.co.in and http://www.cisco.in redirect to http://www.cisco.com/in/
http://www.ebay.co.in actually redirects to http://www.ebay.in/

So, from these examples it does not sound like .co.in is still more popular among global companies than the main extension .in

Hey zehrila, you think like that., Most .in's (not .co.in's) have a great value. Our company tried to buy some .in's (For our jobs portal) for as high as 30000$ (was not able to get it because the owner was greedy and expected more). Ofcourse, online shops will never be a hit in india for atleast next 10 years, but city people are now getting attracted to buing online.
Indians are hesitating to buy online because they get satisfied only when they feel the products physically, thatz a mentality people have in india :)

Interesting the value you put on .co.in when I have made just under $20,000 in .co.in this is 6 domain sales and Wot a good c hap who posts on here regular has sold over $xxx, xxx in .co.in none of my sales have come from .in nor do i have much traffic going through my premium .in names all traffic and that is 10s of thousands of uniques a month go through my .co.in domains. My .biz domains some i have developed and a few i have up for sale get no where near the same amount of traffic.

I would also like to make a note that my .co.in domains that i develop get on Dmoz no problems in under 4 weeks not 1 .in has made it on to dmoz yet. The same goes with .biz

It is good to see others views. Also Bifus you mention the .co.in go to cisco.com/in thats fine it was still a .co.in that took you to that address. Ebay like Google play the .in one month then change to .co.in the next Google have settled on .co.in where Ebay have not they are still playing around i guess they are testing the traffic.

I truely believe at the end of the day it is up to the individual. Some will prefer .biz and others will prefer other extensions. Each to there own individual tastes.

Both http://www.Cisco.co.in AND http://www.cisco.in take one to http://www.cisco.com/in/

Since the opening up of .in http://www.Ebay.co.in has been redirecting to http://www.ebay.in/ ; I've never seen it the other way around.

Since the opening up of .in almost all the publicly reported sales (Sedo, etc) have been for .in; .co.in sales have been mostly reported by individuals, always without any mention of the specific domains or the selling price(s).

The numbers can vary depending on one's location, but where I sit, the number of pages indexed on Google are as follows:

.in 8,410,000 http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site:.in

.co.in 1,510,000 http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=active&q=site:.co.in

.org.in 1,350,000 http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=active&q=site:.org.in

.net.in 55,100 http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=active&q=site:.net.in

.firm.in 608 http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=active&q=site:.firm.in

So, vast majority of Google idexed pages are for the main (.IN) extension; in fact the number for all the sub-domains combined is just one-third of that of .IN.

Not saying that .co.in has no value but its hard to accept the argument that a sub-domain (.co.in) is more valuable than the main extension (.in) itself without any objective, verifiable data of sales, etc. and with numbers like above....

BTW, if .co.in is in fact as valuable as some claim I personally have nothing to loose and in fact much to gain with names like:

Autoparts.co.in
Dining.co.in
Fertilizers.co.in
Footwear.co.in
Funding.co.in
Gemstones.co.in
Lenders.co.in
Materials.co.in
Parcels.co.in
Parts.co.in
Repairs.co.in
Safety.co.in
SmallBusiness.co.in
Supplies.co.in
Textbooks.co.in
Tractors.co.in
UsedCars.co.in

:) :) Cheers !

:hi: the search site:.in on google gives results that include .in, .co.in, .net.in, .firm.in, .org.in etc .... it includes all of these :) hence the results that you get above.

If you look at actual websites that are developed, barring a few exceptions you'll find many many more .co.in's than .in's

the other day i was chatting with a friend of mine (she's an indian but is currently in netherlands as a phd student) ... I casually asked her: have you ever been to a site with a name like xyz.in ? she said .in ??? i said : yeah just .in at the end, no com, no co.in :hehe:
she said : no.... BUT well my yahoo id is @yahoo.co.in and when i was in india, i used to type google.com and used to end up on google.co.in.

(might I add here that *millions* of indians have email addresses that look like the one above. Yahoo is not going to change this any time soon). they type it every day so many times. One can assume that it's become instinctive by now. So it really doesnt matter what kind of sales happen between domain traders...... in the end, .co.in is the one which will have developed sites on them (well, mostly: exceptions exist). In the long run, that's the main factor that will determine what an end user will be willing to pay.

I must add here that exceptions do exist, as is the case with ebay.

Iam from india, .co.in sites was mostly started When the government had restrictions on "who can register .co.in domains".

.in was initially reserved. and .co.in was only given to companies who wants to start a website. , That too, if you have the company name as ebay, you can only own, ebay.co.in, so most companies started their business under .co.in domains.,

Now this is not the case, Most of the people i know, prefers only .in . Noone likes to run a company (if online business is their main source of income) under a subdomain.
Almost no new companies i have come across lately runs under the subdomain .co.in.

The .biz extension i was very excited about when it got released due to being a dedicated business extension sadly it never really has taken off i for one have some great .biz keywords but these hardly get any traffic where my .co.in and .in generate 10's of thousands of uniques a month.

this is a good observation re the limitations of .biz even where the keyword is available.

I know this and thats why I took the time to list numbers not only under .in itself but also under all the sub-domains individually. So, if we do the simple math and add the numbers for all the sub-domains and substract the number from the total you'd get the number just for .in by itself (indirectly). This is how it comes up: total Google indexed pages (8,410,000)comprising of approximately one-third for all the sub-domains combined (2,915,708) and two-third for .in itself (5,494,292).
