THE number of .Africa domains has gone over the 30 000 level.

Registry Africa Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the ZA Central Registry (ZACR), the administrator of the .africa geographic Top Level Domain (gTLD), said it was clear that these sought-after domain names are being snapped up by progressive individuals and organisations confident in the future of the continent and its powerhouse, South Africa.

I suspect (sans economic factors) that this lack of success is because the people of Africa don't share the same vision of homogeneity that the operators of .africa do. They're probably a bit too early into the process, too, unlike the forcefully morally afflicted people of the EU.

I find it interesting that that page says "Masilela said Freedom Month was always the right time to register domains that helped underpin freedom by adding to free discourse on the web."

Yeah right, cause it did us in the West good didn't it... for us the Internet has done many great things, but it's also been a great way to perpetuate unhealthy propaganda out to the masses and a way to publicly silence certain voices.
